System76 make stupidly overpriced computers. You're actually much better off buying a Windows laptop and putting any OS you want on it. I thought the whole point of these things is to save on license costs!

  7. gilkesisking

No you're not. Windows laptops are designed to run Windows, not Linux. No guarantee Linux will work on a Windows laptop and the first thing people moan about is WiFI and battery life if the Windows vendor doesn't provide Linux firmware. System76 laptops are not soldered either and are completely up-gradable by the user, so, its a false economy buying a Windows laptop that'll you'll have to replace even if you want something as simple as a RAM upgrade. You're also not taking into account the open firmware and coreboot provided. No the whole point of these things is to run Linux and run it well.

Easy to see a wobbling keyboard.. give you a cheap impression, but its' not cheap at all.. 1.600 $. Pathetic full HD screen..(hello competitors already are selling 4k OLED screens ) no dedicated video card.. ... It will be a good deal in 2010-14 not now..

Heatsink left side, fan right side? LOL. No fan?yes right... -Working with sunlight, matte screen. 15,6"screen. -Better keyboard. I didnt touch this one but you stated, you touch one you touch em all. -Can take some dust/liquid. -It can run windows, of course. -Adobe Suite if you run it on windows vs the worse time on adobe on mac. it won't beat it at: -battery life. Very import for an inside laptop, those months of developing lying down on the couch are a must. -python compiling. those 15seconds of advantage compiling might add up if you think less and error/trial more. -Geekbench dick measuring. 1700vs 1500...huge brag!

The ‘using’ of the computer isn’t mentioned once, except for tinkering. I started by building an Altair in the 70:ies, coding Basic in a Pet Commodore (no, not the gaming one), ABC80 and the first PCs and ever since 1980 I’ve heard the tale of ‘the next desktop for common people is Unix’, and later ‘Linux’. The era where for everybody computing meant tinkering is long gone, most people nowadays use them for business, science, education and whatnot. There are many tinkerers left, but my bosses’ secretary will never want to mount a disk to use it, as will most others. Setting cpu speed will just not ever be the killer app for portables.

I'm hoping for either a Dell XPS developer edition with Linux preloaded in teh 15 inch range with AMD and/or ARM CPU or a System76 laptop with AMD and/or ARM CPU. For my work as a developer I would love a computer not dissimilar from the Commodore 128 which I believe had two physical CPUs one was MOS6502 and the other was Z80 so it could run CP/M, though since I am too young for a machine like that and this is the 21st century I would instead love that concept for an ARM and AMD CPU that when you power up the laptop has a second controller that asks which CPU to activate with a way to use the ARM CPU as a co-processor or a remotely accessed machine so I can do ARM development on my X86 laptop with a long battery life mode where it boots to ARM Linux on an ARM CPU with a physically powered off X86 CPU. That would be my ideal laptop with its dual CPUs for me as a developer.

  51. gilkesisking

    gilkesiskingΠριν 3 ημέρες

@Kevin Patel nah, privacy, control and these days politics will. People want alternatives. The only reason its not more popular is because you can't just walk into a store and buy a Linux machine, that's the nail. Nothing to do with what you can do with it.

  52. Kevin Patel

    Kevin PatelΠριν 3 ημέρες

@gilkesisking true. The terminal is optional but that's not going to have users flock to Linux.

  53. gilkesisking

    gilkesiskingΠριν 3 ημέρες

@Kevin Patel "Regular users that just want to play games, make music, edit videos, photoshop, do productivity work" Again, it all depends on what that user wants to do, Linux has you covered if you want to play games, edit music, videos and do 3D work, free and professional. Not everyone wants or needs photoshop and AutoCAD..... not every one needs Resolve, Flame, Maya, Arnold, Boris FX, Lightworks, Substance, BricsCAD, Bitwig Studio, etc, etc... but they can on Linux.... I mean, no one buys a Chromebook or MAC to play games do they? But they still sell. All depends on what you want to do. As for the command line, just like CMD, Powershell or the Mac terminal its a choice on Linux, its not required or needed to learn to use the system. Anyone who says otherwise either hasn't used a Linux system in years or simply doesn't know what they're talking about. I repeat to make it clear.. the terminal is a choice, one many Linux users make, its NOT a requirement.

  54. Kevin Patel

    Kevin PatelΠριν 3 ημέρες

@gilkesisking exactly. Regular users that just want to play games, make music, edit videos, photoshop, do productivity work like AutoCAD ect, or just browse the web will use just Windows. They'll have no interest in using something that is unfamiliar to them; and I don't understand why Linux users hate this. Regular users have no desire to learn the terminal or programming commands because they don't need to. Of course Linux has highly advanced features and all but honestly, do regular users even care or use it? I doubt it.

    FuXaPlex LegendsΠριν 8 ημέρες

The price is what stops me from getting a laptop from system 76. I use Pop OS and I think it is a great OS. But, as far as laptops go I could easily save money and pick up a Lenova or a Dell or even a used Lenova or Dell and get just as much PC and maybe even more PC and then just install Pop OS on to it. I want to support Pop OS. But, I think they need to get the price of their hardware down. I do not know if they charge more because it trys to use open source if they can get it or if they just do not have the means to get components like Lenova or Dell. But, I would assume that not having Windows ON it should make it cheaper? idk, I know some companies do get kick backs for putting bloatware on the windows machines. But, they would not have to buy a windows key....But, windows probably just gives those away to companies because they want to saturate the market. So, I would think it would save money. But, it could actually cost more.

  63. Kevin Patel

    Kevin PatelΠριν 8 ημέρες

There are windows laptops for less than $500 with the only bloatware being the antivirus and data migration tool; both of which can easily be uninstalled. As far as saturation goes, Windows has been on computers since the 90s. It's captured it's market share successfully which Linux could not do; there's nothing wrong in that as regular users that will buy a laptop will most likely go with Windows or MacOS for their needs. Also absolutely nothing wrong with that because they simply don't care about the advanced features of a Linux distribution. They just want to web browse, play games, do work, and do video, photo or music editing. It doesn't makes sense for a user to buy a laptop preinstalled with a Linux distribution and learn how to use it when they're already comfortable with Windows.

I've still got my Serval from them. Earlier model, before they switched them to Ryzen 3000s (best mine can support is Intel 9900k), when they had 17" versions of it (which is the one I have), now it is only sold at 15". It's a chonky beast all right, but I wanted the performance more then portability, but I didn't want to give up quite all of my portability. PopOS! is a pretty good low BS wrapper distro around Ubuntu. Mostly repos for drivers from System76, and a bit different UI skin by default. Pretty decent cooling system. Can keep up with a _very_ mild overclock (and I do have it effectively ignoring PL1 and letting stay in PL2 indefinitely, keeping the all core overclock). Case is very high quality. Yes, it is a rebranded Clevo, but nothing wrong with that. Customer support is excellent. Very much recommend.

The answer is no because Linux requires an effort that most people can't bother. Google uses the Android operating system as a scape goat to monopolize business software by using the open source excuse and advertising bribes. Android and Windows basically steal from PC Linux and make sure that any PC Linux will be dependent on a format to interact with standardised operating system thru dedicated software . Linux cannot establish independent software for a business environment because the whole Linux platform is being held up by a small group of people as community service who should be able to get top wages if expected to compete with Microsoft and Google thus Linux would need to cost as much as a Mac and have advertising.

@Nick "Amazing how Canadians are with winter coats. In summer, they'll look back and see how conditioned they were." Is basically the logic of your statement. It's erroneous, dangerous, and above all simply ignorant. But by all means, you keep believing in your nutbar conspiracies and selfish worldview. ✌️

I've converted pretty old laptops to Ubuntu and they end up being a lot more useful. I hand them out to family for free and they end up liking them a lot more than their windows and macos laptops just because they always work and are simple.
